In a candidate lead market, it’s important to remember that your job ad needs to stand out to attract the right person. Follow this simple template to ensure you are sharing all of the relevant information that candidates are looking for:
Job Title (and salary)
Surprisingly, this is where many employers go wrong. It's important to use Job Titles that are widely used, and not company jargon which will exclude your ad from many candidate searches.
Job ads with a salary or salary range get a better response than ads without. It's not essential to include a salary, but please keep this in mind.
This is your opportunity to paint a picture of the type of organisation you are - an elevator pitch. Who are you? What do you do? Small family run business, or large national company? Do you have a company mission statement? Are you growing as a business? Etc. A paragraph should be enough to cover this.
Role & Key Responsibilities
Let's elaborate on the job title. Explain the purpose of this role, perhaps why it has become available, who will it be reporting to etc. This is not an official job description, so it doesn't need to go into too much information, which can be confusing. A general overview of key responsibilities is all that's needed.
Essential/Preferred Skills & Experience
Describe your ideal candidate. What experience/skills/qualifications are essential to be considered for this role, and what would be preferred or beneficial.
What are you offering someone who ticks all the boxes? Here is where you can mention holiday entitlement, training and development opportunities, and any other corporate perks such as staff discount, health insurance, subsidised restaurant, gym membership, free parking, company car/mobile etc.
What are the next steps for successful applications? Is there a cut off date for applications? Where will interviews take place? Will they be expected to go away for training? You can include a phone number for additional information.
